In addition to an overall enlarged capacity, two major considerations contributed to the design impetus. First, an enhanced social environment for staff and visitors, including more extensive communal facilities and increased visibility throughout the building---especially between the HQ's more public areas and the laboratory. Second, a site design and building orientation that would align the spaces where people work and spend time with the enormous natural beauty surrounding them, inviting use of various outdoor spaces according to changing wind and solar conditions throughout the year.
