Moose Manor at the Boyd School

We're working with the San Luis Valley Housing Coalition to help envision Moose Manor, a new affordable housing community built in and around Alamosa's beloved but currently unused Boyd School building, a creation of the 1930/40s-era Works Project Administration. A second building will double the residential capacity on site, increase shared spaces, and frame a collection of communal outdoor experiences ranging from the social to the contemplative.

From its driving concepts to the smallest details, Moose Manor supports the social, emotional and physical health of residents. A centrally-located barbecue pavilion anchors the site's social life while allowing supervision of the adjacent toddler play area and dog park beyond. Strategically located benches invite conversation between dogs' humans. A pathway winding up the "morning meditation mound," built of excavated rubble from on site, allows a quiet moment with the sun before work. And perhaps most importantly, a narrow drive reluctantly allowing cars to snake from south to north along a raised, textured surface, sends a clear message to drivers: slow down---this space is not yours alone, but the realm of those in on foot, in wheelchairs, on bikes, on skateboards, and on all fours.
